Using Skype / FaceTime as a Networking Tool


For centuries business was done on a handshake but in today's global economy business partners are often spread out across the nation or even multiple nations. Email and phone calls can facilitate communication but cannot facilitate the highest degree of relationship building. Most global cultures still demand personal contact in building confidence in others as do many high-level business executives.

This is where Skype and FaceTime comes in. When you use Skype instead of a simple phone call the context shifts from impersonal to personal. Skype allows you to add the important element the body language which is missing from the telephone and it brings in voice inflection which is missing from email.

Although it does not have the feel of an in-person meeting this technology does come close. Each participant on the call can see the other person, provided video is turned on, in such a way that it is almost like being across the table from them.

Here are two important things to remember about the meetings:

First: You can enhance the personal relationship by carefully selecting the background the participant will see.

Position your computer’s camera in such a way they can see elements of your personality and your company as they could spur questions or comments, reveal similar areas of interest or show the professionalism of your character.

Second: Be sure you do not turn on Skype's face tracking.

Many countries’ internet speeds are not fast enough to allow the face tracker to work without jerking the picture and disrupting its performance. This can be due to the quality of local internet service providers or could be due to the regulations of the country where the Skype call is being received.
