Use this graphic to teach the different team styles.

Explain

In the upper left make a list of the types of sport where there is high specialization but low coordination between team members. Examples are swimming team and relay races. Team members specialize in a specific aspect of the sport, such as short distance or long-distance swimming/running. While playing they do not talk to each other.


In the upper right make a list of the types of sport where there is high specialization AND high coordination between team members. Examples are football, soccer, and baseball. Players are highly specialized for a position and must work together while playing.


In the lower left make a list of the types of sport where there is low specialization AND low coordination between team members. Examples are bowling teams and golf teams. Players must be able to handle any play but they do not talk to each other during the game to coach each other on the next play.


In the lower right make a list of the types of sport where there is high specialization but high coordination between team members. Examples are badminton and volleyball. Players play every position during the game and must talk to each other while playing.

Group Discussion

Have the group offer types of sports for each quadrant to increase their understanding.

Debrief

Once all the quadrants are filled with at least two or three sports draw another chart and have people suggest what types of teams or positions at their organization.
